How to recreate the inside of the "Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijk Historie" depot in a container.
The Naturalis Biodiversity Center began life as the Natural History Museum. Built between 1900 and 1911, the museum is long since outdated. In 1997, the Naturalis collection of more than 37 million specimens moved to a new home.

The old building that served as a museum depot for the last 106 years has a very special cast iron construction inside. All four floors are open cast iron, so you can look from the ground floor to the roof. On each floor, all walls are covered with iron cabinets. And behind every cabinet door sits a new wonder of nature, from insects and rocks, to a multitude of plants and animals.

As part of a PhotoArt exhibition, Matrix Frame was asked to capture the atmosphere of the museum and recreate the Depot inside a container. Photographer Arjen Veldt made a 360-degree impression of the museum depot. Matrix Frame then produced 4 light boxes to cover the walls and ceiling of the container. Now you can walk under the giant whale jaws and have a peek inside the cabinets to unlock the wonders of nature.

Room Acoustics and Surrounding Lights

Contractor Burgy specializes in restoring old monumental buildings in the Benelux - from 16th century residential houses, to thousand-year-old churches. At his modern concrete office in Leiden, he wanted to convey the old-world charm of his restoration projects, while also improving the acoustics.

This was achieved beautifully for both the eyes and the ears by installing sound-absorbing ceiling panels that mimic the look of 17th century plasterwork. The light boxes help to reduce the noise, and at the same time, create a charming and comfortable work space.

Even the printed fireplace seems to radiate heat.

Taming the Turbulent Zuiderzee
Newsletter 22 June 2017

The Past and Future of the Zuiderzee Project

The Zuiderzee project, named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, is the best-known land reclamation project in the world.
With nearly a quarter of its land area below sea level, the Netherlands is one of the most low-lying countries in the world. The constant threat and danger of heavy flooding made it necessary to take bold measures to ensure their safety. The Dutch did this most famously with the Zuiderzee project.

In 1918, the Dutch began the process of taming the turbulent Zuiderzee, a 5,000-square kilometer inlet of the North Sea. The 32-kilometer long Afsluitdijk provided security, land was reclaimed from the water, and with the new land came countless opportunities.

How did they do this in the 1920s? Where did they build the villages and cities and who is allowed to live there? How did this new society develop?

You can find the answers to all of these questions at the Expo "Polderen, Past and Future of the Zuiderzee project"
Two gigant cylindrical frames with a perimeter of 45 meter / 140 feet are interlocked.

Eddie Bauer Ice Box

Step into the Cold!!
Eddie Bauer builds to the future by keeping an eye on the past.
Amanda Hill and Jennifer McCullum react to the cold as they try on their Eddie Bauer outerwear inside the brand new "EB Ice Box" during a media preview of the newly reformatted flagship store at Bellevue Square in Bellevue, Washington.

In our coldest installation to date, Matrix Frame, working with Rainier Industries, was excited to produce the light box inside the -25 degree EB Ice Box, which was built to give customers an authentic way to test gear in sub-zero temperatures.

It was company founder, the original Eddie Bauer who actually came up with the ice box concept in 1950, when he would have his associates and employees test product overnight in meat lockers downtown.

To learn more about the Eddie Bauer Ice Box and how the company has refocused on getting back to the ideals of their founder, watch the news video at the link below.

Looking at the Stars

Astronomy in Leiden has a long tradition. In 1633, Leiden University established an observatory to accommodate the so-called quadrant of Snellius (the Dutch scientist best known for his laws of refraction). This founding date makes the Sterrewacht Leiden the oldest still operating university observatory in the world. In the first two centuries of its existence it served mainly an educational purpose. The construction of a spacious new observatory building in 1861, under the supervision of F. Kaiser, marks the beginning of the modern era of astronomical research in Leiden. This building was the home of Leiden astronomy for over a century, and still has powerful symbolic value.

Matrix Frame is proud to be the supplier of the light boxes and wall frames in the visitor center of this beautiful observatory.
